Christmas Eve Service
December 24, 2009

The luminaria were placed on the church walls with care,
in the hopes that the Christ Child would soon appear there.

The original photograph by Louis Erne graces the main hallway of COGS.
Inside ...

we await the Christ Child with scripture and song.

Families gather

to hear the Christmas message of hope, joy, peace, and Love.
Pastor Bill was as excited about Christmas
(whisper presents) as the children who gathered around him.

The service ended with concentric circles of worshipers holding candles around the sanctuary while singing Silent Night with the choir simultaneously singing Peace, Peace, Peace .

Now go forth into the world with hope, peace, joy and love!

Celebrate the Season
a Christmas Cantata sung by the choir
during the 10:30 am worship service on Sunday December 20, 2009

This delightful Christmas Cantata by Joel Raney includes some familiar carols but often with a latin rhythm or gospel feel. Our new Pastor Bill (Ingraham) thought he was getting out of giving a sermon this Sunday but because he joined the choir, he ended up singing a solo!

Photos below include narrators, soloists, children's choir as well as the Chancel choir and occasionally orchestra members.

Believe
a Christmas Musical performed
during the 10:30 am worship service on Sunday December 13, 2009

The musical was written by local author Faye Couch Reeves. The story, both poignant and humorous, features a 15-year old girl, Allie, for whom the joy and magic of Christmas has disappeared amidst the commercialism and greed that she sees in current society.

Preview of Believe
a Christmas Play to be performed
during the 10:30 am worship service on Sunday December 13, 2009

Rehearsal on November 8, 2009

The play is written by local author Faye Couch Reeves. The story, both poignant and humorous, features a 15-year old girl, Allie, for whom the joy and magic of Christmas has disappeared amidst the commercialism and greed that she sees in current society. Come see how she comes to believe in the Christmas miracle.

Blocking out the action scenes

The play also features the children in a Christmas pageant scene, members of the Chancel Choir as carolers, and plenty of familiar music sung by cast members, choirs, and even the congregation.

John Palmer's explains that this photo

was taken at the Old Santa Fe Prison which is really a sinister place. In 1980 there was a major riot in which 33 prisoners were killed. I believe it was the largest death toll in any prison riot in this country. In any case the prison itself now closed has not been really cleaned up very much. Dirty, dark, threatening. I was trying to capture that mood.
A prize-winning vest

by Pat Rosenak took 2nd place and her knitted lace shawl 3rd place in the crafts show.

COGS hole in wall --> hospitality room
September 7 - 12, 2009

With people crowding the hallways during the hospitality time between and after the worship services, we felt a need for more space - hence the creation of a wide access to classroom 1 from the main hallway. Here we present 3 views of the hole in the wall which will shortly become the hospitality room.
Central View

In the back of the room is a divider which separates the hospitality room from classroom 1 during the children's Sunday School time. The divider may be opened after the classes are finished to allow more space for the hospitality gathering.

Rev. Marilyn Levine returns briefly to Albuquerque
August 24, 2009

When word got out that Marilyn was returning to Albuquerque to close on her father's house, a brunch was hastily arranged for Monday morning August 24 for whomever could make it.
Life on the Indian Reservation

This past winter was one of the worst winters on the Indian Reservation in the northwest corner of North Dakota. Her parishioners were surprised that she survived the winter and is still with them.

Although the culture is completely different - so she feels she has entered a totally new world, she is happy with her decision to minister to the parishioners in New Town and her other smaller parish.
Rev.M.Levine_09aug_2

Rev.M.Levine_09aug_3

Reconnecting

Marilyn seemed just like her old self - as if she hadn't been gone a day whereas it has been just about one year since she left for ND. We not only enjoyed reconnecting with her but also with other members of COGS who haven't been able to attend the Sunday church services recently because of work schedules and other commitments.

Getting down to business

John had some good advice for the Council - including that we should figure out in collaboration with our new pastor, what the primary mission of COGS is - capsulized in 7 words or less. Then current and future projects can be evaluated as to whether or not they further the primary mission.

Tuesday evening Prayer Open House
June 23, 2009

The Tuesday evening prayer group held an Open House on June 23. Here are some of the participants at the end of the centering prayer, before the socializing.
Prayer group

The prayer group meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm for about an hour or so in the COGS lounge. Although it is most beneficial when you come on a regular basis, drop-ins are welcome. Generally, first we do the evening prayer liturgy from the front of the hymnal followed by healing prayers for those who are lifted up by the people present or for individuals who have put in a request beforehand to either Kirby Lewis, our leader, or one of the interim pastors. We close the evening gathering with 20 minutes of centering prayer.

Participants have commented on the strong sense of spirituality felt within the group.

Southwest Conference Annual Meeting
April 24-26, 2009

Several members of COGS attended the Annual Meeting of the SW Conference that was hosted by the Scottsdale Congregational UCC church in Arizona. Some of the photos, including this logo came from the SW Conference website.

If any of the attendees took photos, hopefully they will email some good ones to the web administrator to add here.

Saturday's Worship Service

Here is a picture of the beloved Dosia Carlson, who accompanied us in Saturday's worship service as we sang her Hymn, "Holy Hospitality." It fit our theme so beautifully. One gentleman, who grew up in the Indiana/Kentucky Conference, talked about going to camp as a young man and singing songs written by Dosia - and now he is a member of the Oro Valley church, and was present as their delegate to sing this Hymn written by her.

This photo and the next two plus his commentary were taken from Rev. John Dorhauer's web blog.

There were several wokshops offered at the Annual Meeting. Here are three of them. This one by SW Conference Minister, John Dorhauer, gave participants a chance to meet their General Synod delegates, and share their thoughts about the resolutions that will be presented at Synod. It is the role of the delegates to discern the Holy Spirit's movement for our United Church of Christ. Participants added their voices to the deliberations and learned more about what issues will be placed before the delegates at Synod.

Is My Church Jumping?
by guest speaker Kent Siladi

Nobody wants to go to a boring church. In the UCC we value diversity among our churches - yet we know that an alive, vibrant church is a response to the call to be God's faithful community. Participants discussed what a vital church looks like, feels like, smells like, sounds like and even tastes like?

Kent Siladi has been involved in all of the settings of the United Church of Christ, having served in the local church as pastor, in the Association setting as a member of a Committee on Ministry and in the Conference setting as staff. In the national setting, Ken was a participant in the UCC History, Theology and Polity Network and chaired the General Synod 25 Nominating Committee.

From Good to Great:
Building the Leadership Team for a Growing Church
by guest speaker Cameron Trimble

Like all organizations, churches with strong, visionary leadership thrive in even the most challenging of settings. Today's culture poses unique challenges to the leaders of our existing UCC churches. Looking at some of the best practices of successful leaders in our denomination and others, participants explored the ways leadership affects the strength and viability of a local congregation. They also explored ways to identify, train, equip and empower the best leaders in their churches.

As the National Advisor for New Church Development to Local Church Ministries, Cameron Trimble provides direction to the UCC in church planting and church multiplication.

Guest Preachers at COGS in 2009

Richard Mitchell - during Lent
(March 15, 2009) - Courage in Action

Richard Mitchell was the first of the lay members to substitute as preacher for Interim Ministers, the Reverends Carla and Bruce Cunningham, when they had to be away. Richard set the preaching bar high!
Bob Rosenak - Easter Sunday (April 12, 2009)  -   Dichotomy

Bob had little time to prepare for a sermon when Carla called upon him after Rev. Bruce Cunningham became ill Saturday night. ... and it was Easter Sunday with a huge crowd in attendance. Bob was more than up to the task.

GuestPreacher09_2

GuestPreacher09_3

Matt Smith - 1st Sunday after Easter (April 19, 2009) -
Beyond a reasonable doubt

and the preaching bar was raised even higher.

Why are we searching for a new pastor when our congregation has such talent in its midst?
Lanie Dickel - 2nd Sunday after Easter (April 26, 2009) -
Blessings

Now it was time for a woman to step up at the plate. The preaching bar had been set so high, she just walked under it!

Rev. Francis Rath - 3rd Sunday after Easter - May 3, 2009
Title to be announced

Rev. Rath is a familiar face around COGS, having preached many times here. Was he sent, perhaps, to set the earlier theological wanderings back on track?

Easter morning dawns at COGS -
April 12, 2009

We were not off to a good start. It was a wintry day, interim minister Bruce was in the hospital with his wife, interim minister Carla, at his side. The early Sunrise Service was to be held at a park at the foot of the Sandia Mountains but the gate was locked so it was held at the kiva beside the church and we did not see the Sun rise.

... But then a miracle happened ...

A phoenix arose from the ashes

Seemingly out of the woodwork, members rose up to the occasion and took over the Service for Reverands Carla and Bruce. It was quite a moving scene with a terrific sermon (prepared, as it were, on the fly ).
COGS is one incredible church!

The Easter Egg Hunt was held in the Sanctuary instead of outdoors because of the weather. Can you spot some of the eggs?
Easter09_2

Easter09_3

Easter Egg Hunt

There are quite a few children these days at COGS and the Sanctuary was a bit busier than usual with the children scurrying around looking for eggs. Even the littlest children were able to find some for their baskets.
Meanwhile in the kitchen

The chefs were busy with many more behind the scene (out of view of the camera).
Easter09_4

Easter09_5

I remembered my plate!

as did quite a few others so we are on our way to becoming an environmentally friendly church. Hopefully next time, more people will remember to bring their own tableware - thus saving both trees and COGS energy bill.
Enjoying Breakfast

This was a winning table with everyone bringing their own tableware.

Easter Worship Service

It is nice to combine both the early and formal Services together into one every so often so that we can be one big family, worshiping together.

Special Easter Music

There was lots of good music. Here we have a trumpet (at left end) joining the bell choir.

The Finale

The Service came to a close with the benediction followed by the choral response. For the response, some of the congregation joined the choir on the steps to the altar and together they sang a resounding Hallelujah chorus

He is risen, He is risen indeed!
