Focus Scripture –
Matthew 6:24-34
"No one can
serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or
be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Therefore I tell you,
do not worry about
your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what
you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the
body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air;
they neither sow nor
reap nor gather into barns, and yet God feeds them. Are you not of more value
than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of
life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field,
how they grow; they neither toil nor spin,
yet I tell you, even
Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so
clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown
into the oven, will God not much more clothe you — you of little faith?
Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or
'What will we
drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these
things;
and indeed God knows
that you need all these things. But strive first for the realm of God and God’s
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow
will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today."

Bread for the World’s 2008 Offering of Letters –
The Peace and Justice
Committee is participating again this year in Bread for the World's annual
"offering of letters". We will
be asking Congress for more and better poverty-focused development assistance —
funding for programs in the U.S. budget that give people in poor countries the
skills and opportunities to break the cycle of poverty permanently. These include investments in things like
education, agriculture, nutrition, health and clean water. Last year, members of COGS and friends wrote
close to 100 letters — we hope to increase that number this year. Information is on the table and easel in the
hallway. We encourage all of you to pick
up the information, write your letters, and bring them back to church and drop
them in the basket. On June 15, we will
be dedicating the letters and faxing them to your senators and
congresswoman. Thank you for your
participation in this important ministry.

Hunger and Poverty Facts
In the past
two decades, immunization has prevented an estimated 20 million deaths. Mothers
who receive at least a primary school education are 50 percent more likely to
immunize their children than mothers with no schooling.
STILL, about one-fifth of the world's adult
population—771 million adults—do not have basic literacy skills. At least
two-thirds of these are women.

Flowers on the Communion table – have been given by Richard
Mitchell, in celebration of Ruth Randall’s birthday on May 29.
