Focus Scripture    Matthew 7:24-29

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise one

who built a house on rock.  The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat

on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.

And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish one

who built a house on sand.  The rain fell, and the floods came,

and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell – and great was its fall!”

Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching,

for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Bread for the World’s 2008 Offering of Letters
The Peace and Justice Committee is participating in Bread for the World's annual "offering of letters".  We are asking Congress for more and better poverty-focused development assistance — that will give people in poor countries the skills and opportunities to break the cycle of poverty permanently.  These include investments in education, agriculture, nutrition, health and clean water.  Last year, members of COGS and friends wrote close to 100 letters.  Information is on the table and easel in the hallway.  Write your letters, bring them back to church, and drop them in the basket.  On June 15, we will dedicate the letters and fax them to your senators and congresspeople. – Beth Kissling

Hunger and Poverty Facts

The number of children under five who die each year has dropped below 10 million for the first time since 1960.

STILL, 28,000 children under five die every day from preventable causes, more than half of them hunger-related.
