Focus on the Gospel    Matthew 16:21-28

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men."

Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom."

State of the (Sunday) School AddressWe still need volunteers to be lead shepherds! We currently only have 2 volunteers, and while I'm very grateful to those two people, that's just not enough to make the program run.  Close your eyes for a moment and imagine COGS without a Sunday School program this year. What would that say about our church's values and priorities?  If you've been thinking about volunteering but just haven't gotten around to signing up yet, please do so NOW (on the bulletin board in the hallway).  We need lead shepherds for September, December, and every month of the spring semester.

New Member Classes

New member classes will be held on the first and second Sunday mornings of each month, following the 10:30 service.  New members will then be received into the church on the last Sunday of the month.  If you are interested in learning more about the United Church of Christ and Church of the Good Shepherd,
please join us on those Sunday mornings.

Sacred Conversations on Race

Everyone is encouraged to attend our next Sacred Conversation series, which will begin on Sept. 21 at
9:15 a.m. in the parlor.  Continuing the discussion we began last June, this next discussion, the first in a planned series of five, will focus on the question, "is racism real?"  These sessions are a direct result of UCC General Minister John Thomas' call for all churches to have a "sacred conversation on race," in response to the controversy around several out-of-context soundclips by Trinity UCC's Rev. Jeremiah Wright last Spring, and the national attention it produced.  You are urged to attend these discussions, whose only aim is increased understanding and awareness by sharing honestly with one another in a safe environment. – in the Parlor –
