Focus on the Gospel    Matthew 20:1-16

For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, 'You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.' And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?' So the last will be first, and the first last.

and Potluck

next Sunday, September 28

after the 10:30 a.m. service

As most of you know, we are here (as your Interim Pastors) to learn and grow with you on this journey.  We are here to listen to one another, and to challenge one another.
We would like to invite each of you to a special “Forum” and Potluck we will be having next Sunday, September 28, after the
10:30 a.m. service, in Fellowship Hall.  Please join us for a meal, a presentation, and a time for asking questions and sharing, as we begin this journey together.  Much care,

Rev. Carla and Rev. Bruce

NOTICE:  regarding HOSPITALITY next Sunday, Sept. 28There will be no regular hospitality next Sunday, September 28, due to the Pot Luck and Forum with Rev. Bruce and Rev. Carla    Joellen Hopkins

Turquoise ChaliceThe Sixth Annual Turquoise Chalice Award and Benefit Dinner will be held this Friday evening, September 26, at 6 p.m., at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.  This year we are honoring The Storehouse and its general manager, Lee Maynard.  The event will also feature the inspiring humor of Al Staggs.  Tickets are $75.  This is the yearly benefit for the New Mexico Conference of Churches (NMCC), an ecumenical organization that we have actively supported for many years.  For the last four years, Church of the Good Shepherd has hosted an overflow table (11 people) of members and friends.  We would love to have at least one table this year and maybe two. Come on along.  It really is a delightful evening.  Please contact Rev. Carla and Rev. Bruce if you would like to attend.

ConfirmationChildren & youth are the future of this congregation!  However, as we all know, the young need preparation for church membership – which is the rationale for the Confirmation Class.  Rev. Carla & Rev. Bruce are prepared to teach a Confirmation Class for youth, 7th grade and older.  We are asking any young people within this age range who are ready for Confirmation to contact one of the pastors, or call into the church.

Volunteers for “Homeless Stand Down”For the homeless veteran, every day brings a new challenge to find food, clothing and shelter.  Would you like to help make a difference for a veteran in need this fall?  Sponsored by the NM Dept. of Workforce Solutions and the VA Hospital, the Homeless Stand Down, a two-day event, will provide meals, winter clothing, and access to needed community services to homeless veterans on Oct. 17 & 18 at the Veteran's Integration Center on Central and San Pedro.  The COGS Ministry of Justice is looking for volunteers to help either on Friday or Saturday, or both days, to help distribute clothing and to assist with registering participants for the events on site.  Please see the tear-off sheet below and sign up to lend a helping hand and to get more information.

New Member Classes

New member classes will be held on the
1st  and 2nd Sunday mornings of each month, at
11:30 a.m.  New members will then be received into the church on the last Sunday of the month – this month, that is next Sunday, Sept. 28.  If you are interested in learning more about the United Church of Christ & Church of the Good Shepherd, please join us on those Sunday mornings.

Sacred Conversations on Race

Beginning TODAY at 9:15 a.m. in the parlor

A POINT TO PONDER

“Sacred Conversations is an important topic.  However, it is a subject that does not touch my life. I am a middle-aged senior citizen who attends a church that welcomes everyone.  I am not a racist and my forebears did not own slaves.”  Is that an accurate description of how you feel about Sacred Conversations?  If so, come and participate in the discussions and gain some enlightenment on the subject.in the Parlor –
