Focus on the Gospel    Matthew 21:33-46

"Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it." When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. But when they tried to arrest him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him to be a prophet.

Announcements

Flowers on the Communion tablehave been given by Betty & Bob Schilling & family, in memory of Jeri Smith.

Listening PostToday, and on the first Sunday of each month, the Listening Post will be in operation after the

10:30 service, in the Preschool Office.  In July 2005, we discussed the “Instrument of Peace” through mailings and during a church service.  This will provide a place where concerns & suggestions of members of our congregation can be discussed and questions posed & answered.

Memorial Service for Jeri Smith, next Saturday, October 11, 6 p.m., in the sanctuaryWe will gather next Saturday, October 11, at 6 p.m., to celebrate the life of Jeri Smith, who passed from this life October 1, 2008.  The memorial service will be followed by dinner in Fellowship Hall.  Your presence will give honor to her memory.

Neighbor’s in Need offering – Offering envelopes for this special offering are on the table at the back of the sanctuary.  Our own Marilyn Levine, who is serving two churches in North Dakota, says that her churches receive money from the UCC National Office, funds coming from this offering, and that a portion of her salary comes from these funds.  The churches on the reservations cannot afford a full-time minister.  We hope you will give it prayerful thought and give as generously as you can.  Please make your checks payable to “COGS” and write “Neighbors in Need Fund” on the memo line of the check.  Thank you for your support of this worthwhile program.

Text Box: All-Church Picnic
at Rotary Park, Sunday, October 19, Noon to 2:00 PM

Remember all those trees we had in the sanctuary for “A Natural Christmas” last December? Many have wondered or tried to find where these trees were planted. Join us for an All-Church Picnic on
October 19th from 12 to 2:00 p.m. at Rotary Park.

The City of Albuquerque planted the trees in two different parks. The groves of trees have plaques stating they were donated by COGS.
•	Rotary Park — Ventura and Quintana Drive NE (turn east off Ventura onto Quintana and go about one block; it’s on the left)
•	Rancho de Palomas Park — Wyoming and Krim Drive NE (just south of the Gates of Heaven Cemetery)

We will also kick off the 2009 year-long celebration of COGS’s 50th anniversary. There will be games for the kids, lots of food, and lots of fun. Who could ask for anything more?
Do you have a transportable grill that you could bring to the park, provide the coals or propane, and get it started during the second service? Let Judy know by e-mail at judymgilman@comcast.net or call 401-0562.
Bring your meat to grill, a dish to share, and chairs for your sitting pleasure. Paper products, flatware, cups, beverages and tables for serving will be provided.
Please complete the Kirk’s Log tear-off sheet below and indicate if you plan to attend the picnic, if you are interested in helping with games, if you can come early and bring your grill, and if you can bring a dish to share.

Rev. Carla & Rev. Bruce Cunningham’s phone number and e-mail addressPlease feel free to call us or e-mail us, if you have questions or if a need arises.  Our cell phone number is:  734-730-9506.  Our e-mail address is:  carlacrevccu@charter.net.    Rev. Carla & Rev. Bruce

Downstairs kitchen refrigerator – Because several church groups and the Preschool use the downstairs kitchen refrigerator, we all need to be cognizant of each others’ needs and space. As a reminder, the refrigerator space is allocated as follows: LEFT SIDE is for the Preschool; RIGHT SIDE is for other groups.  Before placing anything in the refrigerator, please label each item with the group name and date; if things are not labeled with both group and date, it will be thrown away. Sometimes the use of the refrigerator and Fellowship Hall overlap, so before placing lots of food in the refrigerator, please check the calendar to make sure that other groups aren’t using it at the same time. The calendar is on the bulletin board (wall between the kitchen and Fellowship Hall). Thank you for your cooperation.    Pamela Giberti & Judy Gilman
